Handgun Purchase Permit

Person applying for a pistol permit must be a Vance County, NC resident for 6 months, must be 21 years of age and aware that a complete criminal record check will be done. According to the NC General Statute 14-404(f), the Sheriff's Office must issue or deny the request for permit within 30 days. You must possess some form of valid ID (North Carolina Drivers License or ID) and/or some other form of documentation reflecting residency in Vance County for at least six months. Payment must be made with exact change ($5.00 per permit) or by check made payable to the Vance County Sheriff's Office.

A pistol permit shall be denied for any applicant who does not meet the necessary age and residency requirement, and shall be denied for the following persons:

  1. One who is under indictment or has been convicted of a felony.

  2. One who is a fugitive from justice.

  3. One who is an unlawful user of or addicted to any unlawful or narcotic drug.

  4. One who has been adjudicated incompetent or has been committed to any mental institution.

  5. One who is an alien or unlawfully in the United States.

  6. One who has been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions.

  7. One who having been a U.S. Citizen has renounced his/her citizenship.

  8. One who is subject to a domestic violence protective order.

  9. One who after due investigation, the Sheriff in his sole discretion, is unable to satisfy himself as to the good moral character of the applicant.
